Four Steps to a Right
Relationship with God

Find the truth

If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth. But, if we confess our sins to him (God), he is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from wrong doing (I John 1:8-9 NLV).

The truth is that we all are sinners. To have a right relationship with God we must confess our sins before God and trust that Jesus will come into our lives and forgive our sins that we will become the kind of person who pleases God.

Accept the truth

But to all who believed him (Christ) and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn! This is not a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan--this rebirth comes from God (John 1:12-13 NLV).

Having a right relationship with God is an act of our will. We choose to accept the truth that Jesus forgives our sin and died on the cross to give us the right to become a child of God. It is a gift of God's love where he gives the opportunity to begin a new life of faith in Christ.

Live in the truth.\

...Those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. And new life has begun (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLV).

By confessing our sins and accepting in our hearts that Jesus forgives our sin, we commit to living in God's truth and proving that our old sinful ways are changed. Living in the truth demands love and obedience.

Obey the truth

Those who obey God's commandments live in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Holy Spirit lives in us (I John 3:24 NLV).

Our right relationship with God depends on our continuing to obey his truth. How do we know the truth? If we believe that Jesus is the Son of God then the Holy Spirit has revealed this truth to us. If we love others as Christ loves us, then we prove the power of God's Spirit within us and live in fellowship with him.

And now, dear children, continue to live in fellowship with Christ so that when
he returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from him in shame (I John 2:28 NLV).

Ready to begin your relationship with God?

Pray this prayer:

Our father in heaven, I ask you to forgive my sins as I believe in my heart that your son, Jesus, died to forgive my sins. I ask your Holy Spirit to keep me in the truth and make me the kind of person that you desire me to be. Thank you Jesus for the new life I have in you.
